DIY Skin Salve

Should I start by saying I'm not a doctor?  Yeah?  Okay.  I'm not a doctor.  Don't forgo medical attention you may need if you get bitten by a crocodile or sustain an injury of any kind. 

Now that my common sense disclaimer is out of the way, I thought I'd tell you about a little salve I like to keep around the house for minor cuts, scrapes, break-outs, etc.  

Here's what you need to get started.

Ingredients:

1.5 to 2 tbsps organic, unrefined coconut oil (because of course!)

2 drops of oil of oregano

5 drops lavender essential oil

2 drops tea tree oil

5 drops eucalyptus oil

2 drops of peppermint oil

Use the coconut oil as a base, mix all of these items in thoroughly, and store in an air-tight container.  

Now.  Let's talk about each ingredient.

Coconut oil is the mother-ship when it comes to natural remedies.  It's great for skin, it is antimicrobial, and it also acts as a great carrier oil for the other ingredients.  Lavender oil is not only calming, it's also anti-inflammatory.  Tea tree oil is anti-fungal, anti-microbial, and anti-viral. Eucalyptus oil contains antiseptic properties, and peppermint oil is both cooling and promotes healthy skin.  Oil of oregano with its antibiotic properties is, by many accounts, kind of amazing. Instead of purchasing a half ounce bottle for $30, I buy the caplets for a MUCH cheaper price, pierce the end, and squeeze out the contents.  I've personally found that to be just as effective as the pricier option.

I use this salve around the house on minor scraps and cuts.  I use it on occasional break-outs. When I have a cold, I rub it under my nose.  The eucalyptus and peppermint oil tend to help me breathe a bit easier. 

Like I said before, I'm not a doctor.  It's not an end all, be all, and it certainly doesn't replace medical care.  As long as one demonstrates good sense, though, it's really handy to have around.
