DIY Make-up Remover

Posted by

Over the years, I've really embraced the do-it-yourself method for skincare and personal hygiene products.  Of course, since you're reading this on my bath product website, I'm sure this comes as no surprise to you.  I make just about everything I use-- even deodorant.  However, my last stronghold in the skin care section at the grocery store was the facial cleanser section.  I have used another olive oil based, orange scented cleaner for over 10 years.

Upon making my first batch of Orange Burst Soap, I decided it was time for this to change.  I decided to try my hand at making my own make-up remover.

Olive Oil Make-up Remover

  1. Shred 1/2 a bar if Orange Burst Soap (or any of our soaps), or cut it into very small pieces.
  2.  Pour 1 C of extra virgin olive oil into a double boiler, and turn on medium heat.
  3. Add the soap shreds to the olive oil, and stir occasionally until the soap has dissolved.  At this point, it's safe to add any additional essential oils you might want.
  4.  Set aside, and allow to cool a little.
  5. While the concoction is still warm (but not too hot), use a hand blender to blend everything together.
  6. Once the mixture has almost cooled to room temperature, pour it into airtight container.  You can even use one of your old Happy Lane Scrub jars.  Just be sure that it's squeaky clean and well dried beforehand.

Voila!  Now you have your very own, all natural, chemical free make-up remover.  Since Happy Lane soaps contain a lot of glycerine (a naturally occurring product of saponification), once it has completely cooled, the product will have thick, slightly gelled texture.  Aside from cleaning make-up, this makes a great intense moisturizing body wash as well as a shaving gel for dry legs and sensitive underarms.
